Training Methods

Clinician Wendy Auzqui

Wendy’s colt starting begins with some very thorough ground work. This establishes respect and communication with a colt and is achieved through a process of approach and retreat. Wendy does the initial ground work in a round pen. She teaches the horse to listen to her direction so that she can control the horse’s body and mind. She then desensitizes the colt to objects she will use in training. Once the horse is comfortable and listening to Wendy, she prepares for the first ride. On average the ground work only takes a few days. When helping people with their horses, she encourages total control on the ground to advert problems later. She believes the first rides set the tone for the people/horse relationship. Wendy focuses mainly on the first 30 days of training on young horses but her methods apply to all areas of horsemanship.

The horse training methods of Clinton Anderson, Tom and Bill Dorance have been influential to Wendy’s training program but she considers her dad to be her greatest teacher. Weighing only 110 lbs, Wendy proves that her horse training abilities do not rely on brute strength alone but by proven communication techniques.
